Helpful Hints for Storing Your Belongings

Southside Storage has been in business for almost 30 years. Here are some tips we’ve learned that will keep your stored items protected and looking good!
Cover all fabric items like sofas and mattresses. All fabric items should be covered while in storage. We don’t recommend sealing them in plastic as that may cause mold or mildew. We suggest covering them with a thin plastic sheet. Mattresses should be stored on the long side and should be kept off the floor. If possible, sofas should be stored on end to save space. Keep them off the floor also.

Store clothing in plastic containers not cardboard boxes. Card breaks down overtime and attracts bugs.

To keep your clothes smelling good and free from bugs, place a few dryer fabric softener sheets between your clothes.

If possible, dismantle furniture such as tables and bed frames. This will save space and make moving and handling them much easier.

Don’t place items too close to the door. Items could shift over time and keep the door from opening.

Be sure to drain all fuel tanks before storing anything gasoline powered like automobiles or mowers. This will prevent fumes that could be ignited by static electricity and will prevent your others stored items from smelling like gasoline.

Don’t store wet items. The moisture can cause mold and mildew. Drain washing machines, refrigerator ice makers and freezers prior to storing.

Don’t store any food items. Food attract bugs and other unwanted pests.

Don’t assume your homeowner’s or renters insurance protects your stored items. Check your policy or contact your agent to be sure.

Inspect your storage unit every month. You are the only one who has access to your storage unit.

You should inspect it often and report any irregularities to the manager.

Dispose of any cardboard boxes after moving. Bugs lay eggs in cardboard boxes. When you have completed your move dispose of any cardboard boxes.
